Chennai Updates – September 8, 2025

Monsoon Preparedness Work at Virugambakkam Canal

Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin on Sunday launched flood-prevention works worth ₹30 crore at the Virugambakkam Canal. The project includes desilting, dredging, building strong retaining walls, and putting up safety fencing along the stretch. Officials said these measures will improve water flow and help reduce flooding in surrounding residential areas during the upcoming Northeast Monsoon. Local residents welcomed the move, as Virugambakkam and nearby neighborhoods often face severe waterlogging during heavy rains.

Chennai Airport Plaza Nearing Completion

Work on the new plaza area at Chennai Airport’s Domestic Terminal 1 is moving quickly, with authorities pushing to complete it by October 2025. The project, which had seen delays earlier, includes landscaping, improved passenger movement space, and better vehicle access. According to officials, trial access for vehicles will begin by early next month, giving travelers some relief ahead of the festive season. Once completed, the plaza is expected to handle heavy foot traffic more smoothly and give the airport a refreshed look.

Pondy Bazaar Parking Issues Continue

Meanwhile, one of the city’s busiest shopping hubs, Pondy Bazaar, is facing chaos due to its multi-level car park being out of service for the last three months. Shoppers say that malfunctioning lifts, poor upkeep, and lack of proper monitoring have left the ₹40 crore facility unused. With the festive season crowd already filling the streets, vehicles are being parked along roadsides, causing traffic congestion and inconvenience for pedestrians. The civic body has floated fresh tenders to repair and restart the parking complex, but until then, visitors will have to struggle with limited parking options.

Summary

Chennai saw some important civic updates today—new flood-prevention work, faster progress at the airport, and parking troubles in a major shopping area. While some projects are moving ahead at a good pace, issues like the Pondy Bazaar car park continue to highlight the need for better maintenance and quick action.
