The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has made it easier for people to access important civic services without visiting the office in person. From paying taxes to downloading certificates, most of the services are now available online through the official Chennai Corporation website and mobile services. Here is a complete guide on how you can use these facilities.
Pay Taxes Online
Still, many Chennai residents stand in long queues at corporation offices, especially on the last date for tax payment. Many elderly people are not aware that they can easily pay their taxes online.
1) Pay Metro Water tax/charges (CMWSSB)
Steps
- Go to Online Services and click Water Tax & Charges Payment.
- On the billing portal, enter your Consumer/CAN/Connection details (as on your water bill).
- View dues → choose payment mode (UPI / card / net-banking) → pay.
- Save/print the payment receipt from the portal.
Help: 24×7 complaint cell 044-4567 4567 (also shown on the CMWSSB home page).
Safety: Pay only via official portals/authorised billers. Beware of calls asking to send money to private UPI IDs.
2) Pay Property Tax online (GCC)
Path: GCC website → Online Payments → Property Tax → Property Tax Online Payment.
Steps
- Open the Property Tax Online Payment page.
- Enter your Zone No, Division Code, Bill No, and Sub No (these are printed on your earlier bill/receipt).
- Verify owner name/address and select the half-year.
- Pay using UPI / card / net-banking.
- Download the receipt (you can also check later under Payment Status with your bill details).
Tip: If you don’t know your Zone/Division, use “Know your Zone & Division” on the same section. Chennai Corporation
Alternate route: Some guides also point to tnurbanepay.tn.gov.in (choose Greater Chennai Corporation).
This not only saves time but also ensures you don’t miss the deadline and avoid penalties.
Birth and Death Certificate Download
One of the most used services on the GCC portal is applying for Birth and Death Certificates. Parents can register a new birth online, and the certificate can be downloaded directly once it is approved. Similarly, death certificates can be applied for and received online.
Recently, GCC announced that people can even download birth and death certificates using WhatsApp. By sending a request with details to the official GCC WhatsApp number, you can receive the certificate on your phone without any extra charges. This has been a welcome move, especially for senior citizens and people who find it difficult to use websites.
How to use
- Save 94450 61913 on your phone.

1) Birth Certificate – apply/search & download
Steps (web)

My Experience Downloading a Birth Certificate in Chennai
During my baby’s delivery, I filled in all the required details at the hospital. After a few days, I visited the Corporation Head Office to submit the newborn name registration form. Once I submitted the form, the officials uploaded the birth certificate to the official Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) website. I was then able to download the birth certificate online without any difficulty.
Important: Different Websites for Different Areas
There are two separate official portals to download birth certificates in Tamil Nadu:
- Babies born within Chennai Corporation limits – Download from the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) website.
- Babies born in areas like Avadi and Tiruvallur – Download from the Tamil Nadu Civil Registration portal:
https://www.crstn.org/birth_death_tn/BCert
If your baby was born in Avadi, Tiruvallur, or nearby districts, do not use the Chennai Corporation website. Instead, use the Tamil Nadu registration portal mentioned above.
How I Successfully Downloaded the Certificate
When I first visited the Tamil Nadu portal, I tried searching using the RCHID, but I could not find the certificate. Initially, I assumed it had not been uploaded yet.
Later, I searched using the alternative option:
- Gender
- District
- Place of Birth (Hospital Name)
- Date of Birth
After entering these details, the birth certificate appeared instantly, and I was able to download it successfully.
2) Death Certificate – search & download
Steps (web)
- Open Death Certificate Download.
- Use mobile/OTP login on the GCC CRS page, or search with the available fields. gccservices.in
- Confirm the entry → View/Print the PDF.
Alternate portal: crstn.org has statewide search/download options. CRSTN
File Complaints Online
Citizens can file complaints regarding civic issues such as:
- Garbage not collected
- Streetlight not working
- Road damage or potholes
- Waterlogging during rains
- GCC: Use the Complaints/Grievance section or the Namma Chennai app to log issues like garbage pickup, streetlights, potholes, waterlogging; you’ll get a ticket number to track. Chennai Corporation
- CMWSSB: Use Register Your Complaints under Online Services or call 044-4567 4567. CMWSSB
Once the complaint is registered on the portal or through the GCC mobile app, a reference number is given to track the progress. This has improved accountability and ensures issues are resolved faster.
Know About Ongoing Projects and Events
The GCC portal also shares details about new civic projects, road works, storm water drain works, monsoon preparedness, and public health drives. People can also find updates on cultural events, health camps, and awareness programs conducted across the city.
Other Online Services
Apart from taxes and certificates, the portal also provides:
- Trade License Renewal for shop owners
- Marriage Registration information
- Building Plan Approvals for those constructing or renovating houses
The Greater Chennai Corporation has launched a useful initiative for weekly bulk garbage collection from residents. Citizens can request a pickup by calling 1913 or registering through the Namma Chennai app. Every Saturday, from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM, officials collect bulk waste such as mattresses, furniture, and clothes. This scheme is now receiving appreciation from Chennai residents.
These services are now integrated so that citizens don’t need to visit multiple offices.
Why Use the Online Services?
- Saves time and avoids standing in queues
- Payment and receipts are instant and safe
- Certificates can be downloaded anytime
- WhatsApp option makes access even easier
- Transparent process with complaint tracking
