With the ongoing massive renovation works at Chennai Egmore Railway Station, Tambaram has officially transformed into the primary gateway for travelers heading toward the southern delta districts. I recently took a daytime journey from Tambaram toward the delta region, and it offered a great, budget-friendly alternative to overnight sleeper trains.
Here is my complete review of Train No. 16807 (Tambaram to Trichy Train), including a breakdown of the intense Tatkal rush, coach conditions, and the exact strategy I used to find a seat in an unreserved general coach.
The Booking Dilemma: Conquering the Tatkal Rush
I initially planned to book a confirmed seat on Train No. 16807, which is highly popular for daytime travel. This specific train consists entirely of sitting accommodation:
- 2S (Second Seating): Standard non-AC reserve seating.
- CC (AC Chair Car): Air-conditioned sitting coach.
This service started out as a temporary special train, but Indian Railways made it a permanent fixture due to relentless passenger demand.
I logged onto the IRCTC portal right at the booking window to secure a ticket under the Tatkal quota. The speed at which these seats vanish is incredible; within a couple of minutes, both the standard Tatkal and high-priced Premium Tatkal tickets were completely sold out. Left with no other choice, I packed light and decided to buy an unreserved general ticket directly at the station counter.
Boarding at Tambaram: The Rear-Coach Strategy
I arrived at Tambaram Railway Station at 3:20 PM for the 3:30 PM scheduled departure. The train was already waiting on Platform No. 8.
Important Operational Days: This train does not run on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. It operates only five days a week: Monday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
Even though I was traveling on a Monday afternoon, the platform was packed. Unreserved travelers should keep this layout trick in mind: this train places two general unreserved coaches right at the front (near the engine) and several unreserved coaches at the very rear end of the rake.
As soon as the platform gates opened, the vast majority of the crowd panicked and shoved their way into the front general coaches. Seeing the intense squeeze, I immediately walked down to the very end of the platform to check the rear coaches. The gamble paid off—the rear coaches were significantly less crowded, allowing me to step onboard and secure a window seat without any hassle. The train ultimately pulled out of the station with a minor 10-minute delay at 3:40 PM.
Coach Conditions & Onboard Amenities
This train utilizes modern LHB (Linke Hofmann Busch) coaches rather than the old blue ICF rakes, which makes a world of difference for comfort.
- Interiors: Clean, well-ventilated, and structurally sturdy.
- Utilities: The charging points at my bay were fully functional, which is vital for keeping your phone alive on a long daytime trip.
- Cleanliness: Toilets were surprisingly well-maintained and had running water throughout the duration of the trip.
The Chidambaram Line Journey: Food & Scenic Views
One of the best perks of choosing a daytime train over a night travel option is the uninterrupted view of the Tamil Nadu countryside. Because this line cuts straight through the heart of the agrarian delta region, the scenic views of vast paddy fields are beautiful. The train encounters roughly 3 to 6 single-line train crossings along the route, meaning you will experience brief halts at smaller stations to let oncoming express trains pass.
As the train progressed, the dense boarding crowd began to ease:
- Melmaruvathur: A significant chunk of local commuters alighted here.
- Tindivanam: By the time we crossed this station, the unreserved coach became completely comfortable with plenty of breathing room.
You do not need to worry about packing heavy meals or rushing down to station platforms to buy food. A steady stream of local vendors moves through the central aisle of the coaches selling fresh fruits, local snacks, and bottled water at regular intervals.
Alighting at Sirkazhi (En Route to Nagapattinam)
While the train’s final terminus is Tiruchirappalli (Trichy) via the main delta line passing through Mayiladuthurai, Kumbakonam, and Thanjavur, my specific destination was Nagapattinam. To get there, I scheduled my drop point at Sirkazhi.
- Scheduled Arrival: 7:20 PM
- Actual Arrival Time: 8:00 PM
Due to the cumulative delays from single-line train crossings and the late departure, the train ran roughly 40 minutes behind schedule. From Sirkazhi station, local buses and shared transport connect you straight down to the Nagapattinam coastal highway.
Pros & Cons of Tambaram to Trichy Train
The Advantages
- Modern, smooth LHB coaches with clean interiors and functional charging ports.
- Highly affordable transit cost compared to long-distance private buses.
- Frequent onboard food vendors and excellent daytime scenery.
The Disadvantages
- Frequent operational delays due to single-line track crossings.
- Intense boarding crowd at Tambaram, which gets significantly worse on Fridays and Sundays.
My Practical Travel Tips for Delta Commuters
- Arrive Early: If you are traveling with a general unreserved ticket, show up at Platform 8 at least 30 to 45 minutes before departure to position yourself correctly.
- Walk to the Back: Avoid the chaotic scramble at the front engine side. Walk past the reserved seating coaches to the rear end of the platform for a quieter general coach.
- Know the Coach Rules: The ladies-only coach is traditionally attached to the front engine side. Ensure you check the exterior markings before boarding.
- The Backup Plan: If you miss the 3:30 PM train or find the general coach completely unmanageable, you can wait out a short window and board Train No. 20605 (Tiruchendur Superfast Express), which departs Tambaram at 4:27 PM and follows a highly similar route down south.
